I say!
I've been suffering from serious hardware problems, but have finally installed some new kit. This has involved several long distance phonecalls to service providers, hardware suppliers, computer support people, and router people.
All I can say is that I have been given a lot of often conflicting advice. The service providers said its a problem with he PC. The PC people said its a problem with the modem. When all else fails, they both blamed either the router, or Vista. However, finally, everything seems to be installed and working.

Lamu
I say!
I've been trying to keep my mind off things by reading a travel book. The book in question 'The bone man of Benares' by Terry Tarnoff is a peculiar book in that it describes a journey that happened in the early seventies, was written in the mid-to-late seventies, rewritten in parts a few years ago, and finally published in 2004. As such, its descriptions and attitudes are sometimes rather dated, yet it is an amusing read for all of that.
Tarnoff spent about a year living in Lamu, an island off the Kenyan coast. He didn't seem to do much there, except 'hang out'.
Mrs M and myself spent some time hanging out in Lamu about fifteen years after Tarnoff, and I was delighed to find that I had taken some black and white pictures from that time. I don't often take black and white, but always enjoy the results, which are presented below.

Lamu has a strong Swahili influence. No cars are allowd in Lamu town, and in any case the streets ae too narrow.

Donkeys are used for transportation.

The tops of houses are often open to the elements, to allow a cooling breeze in the evenings.

Big Sur
My dear old things!
What a sad evening we had last night, in remembrance of the Big Jambo. Mrs M and myself stood to attention, and I managed a few words before my bottom lip started to quiver. Our thoughts were, and remain, with his wife and son, who were facing a similar ordeal at the same time, in Louisiana.
We ate mostly in silence. I remembered the snaps I took in Louisiana, when I had pointed out how easy it was to buy guns there.
Below is the front of the last postcard the Big Jambo sent me, in July of this year, from his holiday in California.

The Big Jambo
We will all miss the Big Jambo, who passed away on Thursday, very much. I will remember with great fondness the last time I saw him at his house in Louisiana last year. He was an excellent host.
